THE HORSE OF SKYROS

On the island of Skyros survives still to this day a rare kind of small horse, which according to scientific views, are the last descendants of the "Pikermian Pony" that lived in Greece 17 million years ago.
The Pony of Skyros is about 1,04 meters tall (3.4 feet). Its color is brick red and has a long mane. ENDANGERED SPECIES
There is a great effort going on nowadays in order to save the Pony of Skyros. Since 1998 when a population census was performed by the Ministry of Agriculture, their numbers where upsettingly low.
Reasons for this alarming downfall are: the limited use the farmers have for it nowadays, the crossbreeding with donkeys and the incest cases as is expected of animals living in their natural habitat. There are today about 200 ponies all over Greece, when the endangerment limit for this specie's extinction has been set to 1000 from the European committee.
